Changing the narrative on Africa.
Provided by bird story agency, Africa's narrative-change news agency.

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of going to the UK première of “My Father’s Shadow”. It’s a Nigerian film that debuted at Cannes in 2025, the first Nigerian work to be selected for the festival. The film depicts two young brothers and their relationship with their father, all with the backdrop of Nigeria’s 1993 presidential election. The depiction of Lagos and Nigeria in the 1990s is infused with a lot of emotion and romanticism; a nuanced picture is painted, one usually reserved for cities in the West. The filmmakers spoke of wishing to convey the country of their birth with depth, love and accuracy. This aligns with how we at bird wish to cover our continent of Africa: not sugar-coated, but real, nuanced and full of possibility. If you get a chance, don’t miss the opportunity to see this film.
In other cultural news, the UK is to return 100 Benin bronzes to Nigeria. The bronze sculptures are at Cambridge University’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and were looted by the British military in 1897. Of course, this does not mean Nigeria gets back all its sculptures, as a further 900 remain at the British Museum.
